Mulching Experts

Mulching is more than dumping bark in a bed. A proper mulch job starts with pulling the weeds, cutting a clean spade edge where the bed meets the lawn, cultivating the old crusted mulch so water can get through, and then laying fresh mulch at an even two to three inches. C Tetrault Landscaping keeps mulch pulled back off the trunks of trees and the crowns of shrubs, because piling it up against bark holds moisture where the plant doesn't want it and invites rot and rodents. We work in hardwood bark, black, brown and red dyed mulch, whatever matches the house. The edge is the part people notice from the street, and it's the part most crews rush.

Most Greater Boston properties get mulched once a year, usually April into June once the beds have been cleaned out and the perennials are up enough to see. Fall mulching works too and gives beds some insulation heading into winter. You know it's time when the color has gone gray, the mulch has broken down thin enough that you can see soil through it, weeds are coming up through the beds faster than you can pull them, or the edge between the lawn and the bed has gotten fuzzy and the grass is creeping in. Beds on a slope or near a downspout lose mulch faster and may need a light topdressing more often. Skipping a year isn't the end of the world, but bare bed soil dries out fast in July and the weed pressure gets worse every season you let it go.

For a mulching job we need to know your color preference and whether anything in the beds is fragile or newly planted so we can work around it. Cut back and clean up perennials beforehand if you like doing that yourself, otherwise we'll handle it. We need a spot to stage the mulch, usually the driveway, and a clear path from there to the beds. If you have irrigation, point out the drip lines and any low heads in the beds so nothing gets buried or damaged. Existing mulch usually stays and gets refreshed on top; we only strip it out when it's built up past four inches, because too much mulch is as bad for a plant as none at all. Beds get a final blow-off and the driveway gets swept before we leave.
