Watertown packs a lot of houses into a small footprint, and the yards show it. Two-families and three-deckers with a strip of grass out front and a small patch out back, older single-families on tight lots, and a good number of owner-occupied multi-family properties where the landlord is also the guy mowing on Saturday. The soil across much of Watertown is heavy and compacted, and the closer you get to the Charles the more you find low ground that holds water after a storm. Small yards also mean concentrated wear: one dog, one path to the back door, and one set of trash barrels dragged over the same three feet of grass every week will kill a Watertown lawn faster than any disease.
