What Is Sod Installation?

 Lawn Mowing

Sod installation gives you a finished lawn in a day, but the part that decides whether it lives is what happens underneath it. C Tetrault Landscaping strips or kills off whatever is there, rototills the top few inches so the roots have something soft to push into, grades the soil away from the house and out of the low spots, adds screened loam where the topsoil is thin, and rolls the surface smooth before a single roll of sod goes down. The sod itself is laid in a staggered brick pattern with tight seams, cut clean around beds and walkways, and rolled to press the roots into contact with the soil. Sod that's laid on hard, unprepped ground looks perfect for two weeks and then goes to pieces.

When Is Sod Installation Necessary?

 Lawn Mowing

Sod is the right call when a lawn is more than about half weeds or bare dirt, when you need grass immediately for a sale or an event, when you're finishing new construction, or when erosion on a slope means seed would wash away before it germinated. It's also the answer for dog runs and heavy-traffic side yards that never fully recover from seeding. In New England, the best windows are spring, roughly late April into June, and early fall, September into mid-October, when the air is cool but the soil is still warm. Summer sod installation works fine as long as you're committed to the watering, and we don't recommend laying it once nights are consistently freezing. New sod that's drying out shows you fast, with the edges of the strips curling and gaps opening at the seams.

What Is Required For Sod Installation?

 Lawn Mowing

The homeowner's job with new sod is water, and there's no way around it. Plan on watering daily, sometimes twice a day in hot weather, for the first two to three weeks, long enough that the water goes through the sod and into the soil beneath it. After that you back off to deeper, less frequent watering to pull the roots down. Stay off the lawn as much as possible for the first couple of weeks, keep pets and kids to the edges, and wait until the sod is rooted and standing about three and a half inches before the first mow. On our end, we need to know where your irrigation lines and utilities are before we till, and we need driveway space for the pallets, since sod is delivered fresh and needs to go down within a day of arriving. If you don't have irrigation, this is the moment to talk about installing it.
